Thicker mattress without spring is better if the futon will serve as bed and a couch. For a more comfortable sleep, thinner mattress may be topped with heavy foam or mattress pads and toppers. Futon mattress comes in different sizes, such as twin, full, and queen.
To protect the life of the mattress, buy at least one futon cover. Opt for one that is machine washable. Cotton sheet sets and other fine bed linens are also available in appropriate sizes. Some are decorative befitting a washable futon cover while others require dry cleaning. Washable futon covers are more convenient as they can be easily tossed in the washing machine.
